A TDS-2400 industrial skewering machine has been shipped to a food processor in Spain — a pneumatic and servo-driven unit that threads meat onto sticks at 2,500 to 3,000 pieces per hour, supplied with custom moulds for the customer's own skewer format.
Skewering is the most labour-intensive step left in most meat plants. It is also the one where automation is hardest to get right, because the machine has to handle two things at once: soft meat that deforms, and thin sticks that snap.
This industrial skewering machine takes pre-portioned meat pieces, feeds a stick from a sorting hopper, and drives that stick through the centre of the product. Product is held in a mould, so the geometry of every skewer is the same as the first one.

Three failure modes decide whether a skewering machine works in production, and all three are mechanical rather than electrical:
Stick feeding jams. Sticks arrive in bulk, slightly warped, of inconsistent diameter. A machine that cannot sort and align them stops every few hundred pieces. The TDS-2400 uses a sensor-controlled sorting hopper that detects, aligns and feeds sticks individually — the point of the sensor is not speed, it is that a misaligned stick gets rejected before it reaches the insertion head.
Sticks split or break. Bamboo and wood are strong along the grain and weak across it. If the insertion depth is wrong, or the stick meets off-centre resistance, it splits inside the product — which you only discover downstream, after the stick has contaminated the batch. Precise insertion depth control is what protects the stick, and it is why the drive is servo-positioned rather than air-stroked to a fixed stop.
The stick misses the centre. If the stick enters off-centre it exits through the side of the product, and the skewer falls apart on the grill. Fixing the product in a mould first removes this variable entirely: the mould defines the position, and the machine only has to be accurate relative to the mould.
Stick quality is the single biggest determinant of uptime on an industrial skewering machine, and it is the variable most plants underestimate because sticks look like a consumable rather than a component.
Round bamboo or wood — the default for kebab and brochette production. Widely available and food-safe, but diameter tolerance and warp vary between batches. Buy sticks specified to a real diameter range rather than "about 3 mm" and the stick feeder has far less to reject.
Flat wood sticks — used where the finished skewer has to sit flat in a tray, or for yakitori-style presentation. Flat sticks have a preferred orientation, so the feeder has to align them as well as sort them.
Stainless steel skewers — reusable, and the right choice where splinter risk is unacceptable, where the product passes through a cooking tunnel, or where the skewer is part of the presentation. They are heavier, so the hopper and insertion head see a different load.
The TDS-2400 accepts 2.5 mm to 5.0 mm diameter sticks across all three types, and insertion depth is set so that the stick reaches the centre without bottoming out. If your stick supplier changes, re-check the setting: the same nominal size from a different mill can arrive with a different effective diameter, and that is enough to change how the stick behaves inside the product.
The mould is the interchangeable part. That matters because "skewer" means something different in every market, and a plant that supplies two markets needs two formats:
Middle Eastern kebab — larger cubes, longer sticks
Southeast Asian satay — smaller pieces, shorter sticks, high piece count
Japanese yakitori — small, precise, often on flat sticks
Western BBQ skewers — mixed protein and vegetable, variable geometry
Spanish pinchos morunos and brochetas — small marinated cubes, charcoal-grilled format
Because the mould is quick-change and made to the customer's meat size and stick length, a single machine covers all of them. For a Spanish processor, that means one unit can run pinchos morunos for the domestic trade and kebab-format skewers for export without a second machine.
Three checks decide whether the machine runs on day one or sits in the corner:
Power supply. Spain runs a 230 / 400 V, 50 Hz supply. The TDS-2400 is built to 220 V / 380 V, 50 / 60 Hz and is configured per destination country, so for Spain the unit ships as a 50 Hz configuration — no frequency converter needed.
CE marking. Machinery placed on the EU market must carry CE marking under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. From 20 January 2027, machinery placed on the market falls under the EU Machinery Regulation. Confirm the certificate covers your configuration, not just the base machine — moulds and stick-feed changes are part of the delivered unit.
Air supply. The machine is pneumatic and draws 0.6 MPa. Most EU food plants already have shop air, but if yours runs below 6 bar at the point of use, the stick insertion cycle becomes unreliable — check the pressure at the machine, not at the compressor.
Hygiene. SUS304 and food-grade PE throughout, an open-frame design that tears down without special tools, and IP65-rated washdown. Skewering machines sit directly over exposed product, so cleanability is not a nice-to-have: the machine has to be openable in the time between shifts.
Skewering is a mid-line operation and its output depends on the uniformity of what arrives:

Feed cubes that vary in size and the skewer density varies with them; the machine will still run, but the product will not look uniform on the shelf.
Downstream — a premium commercial meat dicer covers the cubing stage, and a thermoforming vacuum packaging machine packs finished skewers in MAP or skin-pack trays. Skewers are a presentation product: how they sit in the tray is part of what the customer buys.
A skilled operator threads roughly a few hundred skewers an hour, and it is repetitive work with a real puncture-injury risk from the stick. This is the part of the line where automation pays back fastest, because the labour is dense, the task is identical every cycle, and the injury exposure is constant.
The honest qualification: the machine sets the pace, so the upstream and downstream steps have to keep up. If a plant hand-skews today because volumes are small and variable, the constraint is not labour — it is whether the orders are steady enough to justify tooling for each mould. Below a few hundred kilos a day, the mould cost and setup time can outweigh the labour saved.
